THE MUMMY (1999) / THE MUMMY RETURNS (2001) - Royal Guard Production Maquette, Egyptian Ornaments and Scorpions

A maquette from the production of Stephen Sommers' action adventure The Mummy, and a collection of Egyptian ornaments and scorpions from Sommers' sequel The Mummy Returns. In a vision during the latter film, Evelyn O'Connell (Rachel Weisz) saw Anck-Su-Namun (Patricia Velasquez) open a temple door with a decorative scarab handle. Two ornamental sphinx statues were used as bookends in Evelyn and Rick O'Connell's (Brendan Fraser) home.

The production maquette is made from fibreglass mixed with bronze powder and filled with plaster to give it added weight. The small statue depicts a resurrected Anubus royal guard standing on a block of steps with his sword raised. The side of the step base features the carved date "'98" and the artist's name. Accompanying this is a bronze-coloured metal scarab cast on a flat base; a biscuit-foam sphinx statue painted in greys and browns to imitate carved stone; and two black rubber scorpions. The sphinx bookend and rubber scorpions exhibit paint wear. Dimensions (bookend): 15.5 cm x 7 cm x 23.5 cm (6" x 2 3/4" x 9 1/4"); (maquette): 16 cm x 17 cm x 32 cm (6 1/4" x 6 3/4" x 12 1/2")
