Manuscript Document Signed 'Sam Huntington' as Justice of the Peace, April 5, 1771, Norwich, Connecticut, 2 pages, 12.5' x 7.5', Very Fine. Being a Superior Court debenture ordering that moneys owed to various judges of the Superior Court be paid from the public treasury of the colony. William Pitkin ('W Pitkin') signs as one of the judges who received his balance. Pitkin was an officer in the French and Indian War, and was a member of the council of safety for much of the Revolutionary War. Roger Sherman is also named as a judge but does not sign. The document is twice signed by William Hillhouse, ('Wm Hillhouse'), once as auditor, and once on the docket. Hillhouse was a judge of the court of common pleas for many years. He was a major in the 2nd regiment of Connecticut cavalry in the Revolution, and a member of the Continental Congress from 1783-86. Samuel Huntington was a Signer of the Declaration of Independence, President of the Continental Congress, and Governor of Connecticut. Light toning and soiling; some pencil notations on docket page.
