Lot 1399: 1879 Photo ÒThe Late Gen. Hood's FamilyÓ
Photographs
1879 Composite Photograph 'The Late Gen. HoodÕs Family,' Fine.
Image size 10.5' x 14.5,' mounted to a board with text measuring 14' x 18.25.' Water stained along the lower edge; heavy (but uniform) age toning throughout. This image shows the ten surviving members of General HoodÕs family. Hood, his wife, and one child died of yellow fever in 1879, leaving ten orphaned children. This composite picture and explanatory caption was produced by Theodore Lilienthal and sold to raise money for the destitute family. The children range in age from two months to nine years. Surprisingly, there are three sets of twins in this family! One child, little Ida, survived the fever that killed her parents and sibling. A heart-breaking image.
