27' x 20.5', 4 pages, Very Fine. Very early report of CusterÕs massacre at the battle of the Little Big Horn. Page 4: 'The Indian War. A Fearful Fight Against Odds--General Custer Killed and His Command Slaughtered.' The dispatch reads, in part: 'Gen. Custer attacked the Indian village of from 2500 to 4000 warriors...with five companies of the 7th cavalry...Gen. Custer and fifteen officers, and every man belonging to the companies were killed. Reno retreated under protection of the reserve. The whole number of killed was 315. Gen. Gibbon joined Reno when the Indians left. The battle ground looked like a slaughter pen, as it really was, being in a narrow ravine. The dead were much mutilated. Gen. Terry arrived at Gibbons camp on a steamboat...' The two sheets are separated; some edge tears and a small tape mend on back page do not affect legibility.
