Newspapers
1867 & 1876, 'HARPERÕS WEEKLY,' NY, Lot of 3 Papers, Choice Very Fine+.
August 3, 1867 issue, Vol. IX, No. 553, 16' x 11.25,' 16 pages, (pp. 481-496), featuring details on General Custer and his command of the 7th Cavalry, including a fascinating story of his encounter with 'Pawnee Killer' and other Sioux Indians. Disbound, minor toning, wonderful woodcuts. July 22, 1876, Vol. XX, No. 1021, 20 pages (pp. 589-608), with a large, front-page woodcut cartoon by Thomas Nast--illustrating the 'Democratic (Deformed) Tiger ÔFixedÕ.' Interior has a woodcut portrait of General Custer, several woodcuts of the massacre monument, a one-half page detailed map of the Black Hills, and much more! Disbound, with light toning; crisp, dark printing. July 29, 1876, Vol. XX, No. 1022, 20 pages (pp. 609-628), with a front-page cartoon by Thomas Nast of a 'New Alliance' between Native Americans and their defenders (Nast ridicules the efforts of the Democratics to 'retrench' and 'reduce' the Army of the United States, and the cartoon includes news accounts of the 'wholesale slaughter' of soldiers by the Sioux.) This issue has a four-page supplement concerning the autobiography of Sitting Bull--who was made famous, in part, through news coverage by HarperÕs and other papers. Terrific woodcut drawings, plus text. Disbound, light toning. (3 pieces)
