THE MASSACHUSETTS CENTINEL OF DECEMBER 22, 1787. Containing a Report of the Fierce Debate to Ratify the Constitution in Pennsylvania.
The Massachusetts Centinel, Vol. VIII, Number 28, December 22, 1787. 4 pages, 9' by 14.5', in Very Fine condition. Carrying accounts on the inside pages entitled 'From the (Philad.) FreemanÕs Journal. Antifederalism', 'From the (philad.) Independent Gazetteer' and 'Extracts from An Essay, on the Constitution recommended by the Federal Convention'...

Here are three reports, Antifederalist in tone, of the debate in Pennsylvania over ratification of the Constitution. The Antifederalist position was that the Constitution was a radically centralizing document which would destroy American liberty, and betray the principles of the Revolution; the Federalists maintained that the nationÕs problems were due to the weak and inadequate Confederation, and that nothing but the Constitution would enable Americans to preserve their liberty and independence... The Federalists prevailed, eventually, by a a two to one margin.
