Lot 1375 - 1872 Liberty Head Octagonal 50C BG-940 PCGS MS64
1872 Liberty Head Octagonal Half Dollar. BG-940. Nicer than the Jay Roe specimen sold in 2003, with pleasing yellow gold color. Lightly frosted motifs and mirror fields, which is typical of most Indian heads. Choice in all respects, especially so for the assigned grade. Maker: Christopher (Christoph) Ferdinand Mohrig.

Obverse: Same as BG-939, here with much heavier crack at fourth star. Reverse: Open wreath, five pairs of berries left, one pair of greatly mismatched size, five pairs right, plus a tiny berry inside wreath near bow. Large fraction with bar at top of wreath, 1 with elongated upper serif, 2 with flat base, DOLLAR / CAL. below, all letters and numerals deeply punched and well-formed, A of CAL repunched. Faint cracks from rim at 7:30 and 10:30.

(Far a ready reference to these intriguing Cal Gold pieces, we recommend picking up a copy of the Jay Roe catalog sold by Bowers in September 2003.)
