Lot 1352 - 1851 U.S. Assay $50, 880 THOUS. Reeded edge PCGS AU50
1851 U.S. Assay Office $50 "slug", 880 THOUS. Reeded edge. Attractive and lustrous yellow gold with a little toning around devices and legends. Both sides show the impressive effects: the obverse, with the eagle-with-shield design, and the engine-turned swirl pattern on the reverse. These a familiar aspects on this extraordinarily popular Gold Rush issue. A few minor marks and edge dings. The visual appeal and color are superb for the grade, and the luster is ample as noted.

This issue, with 880 fineness includes the second or "reeded edge" style of edge, presumably one of the later 1851 slug varieties struck. The first Type of $50 with a lettered edge took 13 separate steps to produce; by the time these reeded edge coins were made, the process had been improved immeasurably, with this remarkable AU50 "slug" the result.
