LOUIS J. RHEAD (1858-1926)
134. The Century/Christmas Number. 1894.
30 x 39 3/4 in./76.2 x 101 cm
Cond A-/Slight tears and stains, largely at edges.
Ref (All Var): DFP-I, 437; Keay, p. 94; PAI-XV, 437
In his best Art Nouveau manner, Rhead depicts an elfin lass serving a too-ornate-to-be-eaten peacock; it’s not that Rhead was delusional and believed that this is what people would serve, but simply that a peacock is far more sophisticated–not to mention decorative–than a turkey. This is the larger format.
Est: $1,400-$1,700.
