GEORGE REITER BRILL (1867-1918)
13. Tribune/An Anxious Moment. 15 5/8 x 22 in./39.6 x 56 cm
H. I. Ireland, Philadelphia
Cond B+/Slight paper loss near top edge/P.
Brill’s illustrations appeared in many leading periodicals and almost all his posters were for newspapers, such as the following four designs for The Sunday edition of The Chicago Tribune, the daily established in 1848 by journalist, John L. Scripps. Brill had the distinction of having the largest number of posters on display at the 1896 Reims exhibition of any American artist. In line with the bulk of his work, these two designs show very little relationship between image and text, but rather the winsome appeal of the turn-of-the-century covergirls. Case in point: nothing in the posed sedation of this young lady bears the mark of either "An Anxious Moment” or an "Epidemic of Crime”.
