Lot 1259 - 1907 $20 St. G. High Rel, Rom num., wire rim, PCGS MS64
1907 $20 St. Gaudens. High relief, Roman numerals, wire rim. A more than moderately bright and lively yellow-golden specimen with strong luster and a confident, no-compromises strike. Everything you would expect from the Mint State 64 grade, and probably then some. The high relief $20 gold coins were produced to the tune of several hundred pieces a day in the autumn of 1907, though not without difficulties, since each needed three blows from the dies to be rendered to its full advantage. When all was said and done, some 11,250 High Relief MCMVII double eagles were produced to President Teddy Roosevelt's satisfaction (the artist, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, died in the summer of 1907 before the high reliefs were made). Seeing that he no longer had to abide by the artist's wishes, and following through on his objections to the problematic design, Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber then redesigned the dies later in 1907, making them lower in depth and, some complain, less dynamic in appearance. These were the so-called No Motto 1907s. (#9135)
