Lot 125: Signed Letter, John Hancock 1856
<b>Autographs</b><hr><b>(JOHN HANCOCK).</b>
Autograph Letter Signed, 'John Hancock,' the nephew who bore the same name as his uncle (the Signer of the Declaration of Independence), December 10, 1856, 'Hancock House,' Boston, MA, 9' x 9.5,' Very Fine or better. Traces of an old mounting on the upper left corner of the back. Archivally mounted all around to help stabilize this interesting letter. Hancock responds to a request from Mr. Morrell for one of the SignerÕs autographs: 'Yours was duly received, requesting an Autograph of my Uncle John Hancock. It gives me pleasure to inclose you one, affixed to a ticket dated Boston, April, 1767, in a lottery granted for rebuilding Faneuil Hall, historically known as the 'Cradle of Liberty,' which was destroyed by fire.' In a postscript, Hancock writes: 'I seal this letter with the seal that he wore, when he signÕd the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776.' We wonder if the Hancock family has any more lottery tickets laying around to give away free, now that theyÕre worth $4-5,000 each!
