1801 Thomas Jefferson Indian Peace Medal, Large Size in Bronze, Choice About Uncirculated.
Julian IP-3, 76 mm. The color is a rich, red-mahogany brown and the strike is excellent. A screw-hole appears on the edge at the top of the medal, apparently used for suspension at some point. The overall quality is nice, but there is a rim bruise at 11:30 on the reverse. Struck sometime after 1886, as indicated by correspondence from the United States Mint. The original Jefferson medals measured from 100 to 105 mm; it was not until 1861 that Jefferson medals measuring 76 mm were struck. To establish a final date, we look to the lack of a die crack on the reverse that is mentioned in an 1883 letter by Mint Superintendent A.L. Snowden. The failure of the reverse necessitated the creation of a new pair of dies, a fact reported in 1886 by Charles Barber.
