Maps
c. 1747 Rare Early Maps of the Americas

1758, Two Maps of North and South America, by Bowen, in “AN ACCOUNT OF THE EUROPEAN SETTLEMENTS IN AMERICA," 2nd Edition, by Edmund Burke, 2 volumes, Printed for R. and J. Dodsley, London, England, Very Fine.
Two folding maps by Emanuel Bowen, drawn from modern maps and charts dated 1747, in wonderful condition. The two volumes by Burke are hardbound contemporary calf, covers detached and worn, 8" x 5.25" each, 324 and 308 pages. Pages are browned and foxed, but the printing is dark and crisp. These contemporary accounts of 18th century European settlements in the Americas are quite good, written by William Burke, but authorship is usually ascribed to “his more famous kinsman [Edmund] who gave substantial help." Howes B974. Some pages are separated, but the history is quite extensive, covering the Spanish, French and English settlements, and interesting accounts of the voyages of Columbus, for example. But the key attractions really are the two folding maps, which are very detailed and reflecting the accuracies and quaint inaccuracies of the known geography of period. (2 items)
