Medals
One of Two Known Original 'Meade' Medal Die Trials

(1866) General George Meade, Union League, Medal Die Trial in White Metal, Choice Prooflike Uncirculated.
Reverse die of Julian PE-20, 80 mm. Designed by Anthony C. Pacquet and struck by the United States Mint. A major rarity in this series, as die trials of U.S. Mint medals are almost unheard-of. This example is an nearly complete reverse that shows General Meade, of Gettysburg, receiving the VictorÕs wreath from an enthroned Columbia. Later, 'VICTOR' and 'DELIVERER' were added to this die. The opposite side of this example shows the standard pattern of concentric lathe lines. Die trials, or Set-up Pieces, as they are also known, were usually retained by the Mint and/or destroyed, since they were not meant to be sold or distributed. This is one of only two of these Meade die trials known!
