Maps
Impressive 1640 “Blaeu” Map of America with the Title Cartouche Surrounded by Native American Indians

c. 1640, VIRGINIAE PARTIS AUSTRALIS, ET FLORIDAE PARTIS ORIENTALIS..., Hand Colored, (by Blaeu, Amsterdam), Choice Very Fine.
15-1/4” x 20”, colored copper-engraved map with Latin text on verso. Blaeu based this map on the Mercator-Hondius of 1606. A number of geographical improvements, however, were incorporated, although two large fictitious lakes, accompanied by explanatory legends in Latin, still appear on the map. The British and French royal coats of arms indicate the territorial interests of the two nations at the time. The Atlantic Ocean holds three sailing ships and two wind roses. Two cherubs hold a small decorative cartouche containing the scale for distance. The title cartouche is surrounded by Indians in multicolored dress, holding various weapons. It is vividly colored in rose, green, and yellow, the remainder of the map being colored in shades of green, pink, yellow, blue, etc. One trivial thin area at blank right edge, and a couple of minor archival repairs on the blank verso, and a great for framing and display. A lovely map with excellent overall eye appeal.
