Swords
Civil War “Hammond” Cavalry Saber

c. 1860 Rare Cavalry Saber marked “C Hammond,” Fine.
Light, old pitting on the 35” blade. Wooden handle still present, but with some loss and with none of the wire wraps. Stamped “C. Hammond” on the reverse of the ricasso; the number “3” is stamped on the counterguard. C. Hammond left no record of his sword making enterprise, but it is believed that they may have had a factory in Virginia as that is where most examples have been found. Hammond modeled his swords after the U.S. Cavalry Saber, Model 1840 wristbreaker, and this particular one is a good example of this curious and somewhat unknown maker’s capabilities.
