1782 'Frisia Recognizes American Independence' Medal in Silver, Prooflike About Uncirculated.
Betts 602. 44 mm. Plain edge. Prooflike surfaces with light iridescent yellow and steel-blue toning, both obverse and reverse, with a few minor edge bumps and dings. Overall, a very attractive specimen. By B.C.V. Calker. This was the first medallic appearance, albeit in Dutch, of the name 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA'. The obverse shows a Frisian warrior clasping hands with an Indian princess holding a shield. Rejected at right is a figure of Britannia, a leopard, and a viper in the grass. The reverse has a multi-line inscription of the Leeuwarden Society for Freedom and Glory. This medal commemorates the recognition of American Independence by the Dutch state of Friesland. A most historic, scarce, Revolutionary War Period medal.
