'PERSONAL MEMOIRS OF U.S. GRANT,' 1st Edition, 2 Vols., 1885-86, New York: Charles L. Webster, gilt-stamped cloth hardbound covers, 584 & 648 pages, 9.5' x 6' each, Very Fine. Covers have a beautiful gilt stamping of a U.S. Grant coin issued through a Joint Resolution of Congress, dated December 17, 1863. Illustrated with maps, plates, and steel-engraved frontispieces. Worn covers, repair to binding of Vol. 1, separated sheets in both volumes: one is a facsimile fold-out of the terms of surrender given Lee, and the other is a letter written by Grant in 1862. Vol. I has a portrait of Grant as a fresh-faced young soldier; Vol. II has a portrait of the seasoned soldier with whom we are familiar. This autobiography is the famous labor of love that Grant embarked upon and finished just before his death--it became a runaway bestseller and a national sensation, restoring his popularity and ensuring financial stability for his family.
