'poor fellows coming here expecting to pick up the chunks...'</b>

<b>(GOLD RUSH).</b>
Autograph Letter Signed from Robert Finch to his brother James, July 14, 1859, Roses Bar, [CA], 2-1/3 pages, About Fine. Typical scattered minor stains do not affect the legibility. In part: '...I have been travelling around for over two months... we started for the American river the South fork where we got some claims there... the water was too high to work on the north of the American.... we all left for the Rough and Ready diggings where I have been ever since... we came down here a distance of ten miles... have not made very much... I shall stay here for the present if I can make...$8.00 per day... I hear the yellow fever is on the isthmus.... I hear the emigration is coming in from the plains poor fellows coming here expecting to pick up the chunks but when they get here they will find themselves mistaken.... I dont know how long I shall be here so... send to Sacramento till I send other word....' A wonderful, on scene letter report of the great Gold Rush mentality and events.
