Washington, May 1, 1834, The Glory Bank, In the City of Washington promises to pay Martin Van Buren Twenty Dollars in Glory, Satirical Note, Very Choice Extremely Fine Plus.
One of the most fascinating series American notes is the satirical notes of the 1837 Hard Times period. They cross over between the token series which has been studied by numismatists from the mid-19th Century and have been coveted by banknote collectors who are amazed by the amount of history contained on one note. These notes are much rarer almost all the token varieties simply due to the fragility of paper. Over a twenty year period, we have perhaps seen three or four Glory Bank notes and this has to rank among then nicest. The design is subtle, but if you look down at it appears to be a coffin lid (not the corner bevels). It is signed by Jackson and A. (mos) Kendall as President and Cashier. At each side is 'To Counterfeit is Death' as used on earlier Colonial period notes and referring to the obscene amounts of spurious and counterfeit notes in circulation at the time. Superb eye appeal, this looks crisp uncirculated at first glance, but with a handling fold. The first we have had the pleasure to offer in our sales and worthy of strong bidding consideration.
