Abolishing slavery. Free speech. Women's suffrage. These are the issues which propelled these early Republican Bay Staters into office - where they stayed, undisturbed, for almost twenty years. In fact, between 1858 and 1880, only one Democratic governor managed to get elected in Massachusetts, and he was driven from office in short order.
