Political
1820 Pro-DeWitt Clinton Broadside

April 18, 1820, Broadside promoting the New York gubernatorial campaign of DeWitt Clinton and John Tayler, Extremely Fine.
23” x 18,” 1 page, some “ghosting” of the printing from where the pages laid together. Published as an ALBANY REGISTER EXTRA and a decidedly pro-DeWitt Clinton / John Tayler piece. Apparently, an effort was being made to bring back Daniel Tompkins, former New York governor and Clinton’s predecessor, who had gone on to become Vice-President under James Monroe. Unfortunately, Tompkins alienated his political friends along the way and a behind-the-scenes movement was begun to replace him as Vice-President in 1920. It was during this uncertain time that the New York governorship was considered as a possible “out” for Tompkins. However, as this piece alludes, Tompkins had some financial problems with the New York Treasury, including some missing funds to the tune of $120,000. As it turned out, Clinton was reelected Governor and Tompkins was reelected as Vice-President, solving this political quagmire. Surprisingly enough, Clinton and Tompkins were once good friend and political confidants!
