Lot 111: Royal Crown Derby Covered Urn
Most Important Royal Crown Derby Covered Urn. Featuring the most incredible and intricate artwork we've ever seen on a Derby piece. Marked in red under glaze with a crown and double "D" mark. Year cypher appears to be for 1887, yet it is somewhat illegible. The overall decoration is reminiscent of Middle Eastern design with interwoven patterns of vines, leaves, flowers, geometric designs, minute dot patterns, etc. The large front and back panels are decorated with flowering plants. The petals of the flowers appear to have an oily iridescence. Some of the leaves shade from golden brown to brilliant gold. The background is composed of very small interlocking ringlets. The whole is overall golden with a background of teal blue and deep blood red. The three tier cover is reticulated both on lower and middle tier. Nearly as amazing as the incredibly exquisite artwork of this piece is the fact that it remains in near mint condition. The only flaw that we can see with this covered vase is that the rod connecting the main body to the separately made base section is missing. The piece appears to have been professionally connected with a rubber contact cement. There is no damage to the porcelain whatsoever. It is our belief that the person who cemented this together was attempting to preserve the integrity of the piece from possible future damage at the vase's most fragile point. Truly a piece of Royal Crown Derby for the world's finest museum or private collection. Approx. 22.5"t x 8"diam. Est. $8,000 - $12,000.
