Lot 1095 - 1868 Pattern Cent. Nickel, plain edge PCGS PR63 J-610
1868 Pattern Cent. Nickel, plain edge. This is the so-called 1868 large cent and is listed as high Rarity-7. These pieces were struck with the obverse and reverse design used to produce regular issue 1843-1857 large cents. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. Only four or five pieces are known in nickel and about a dozen or so are known in copper. The hardness of the nickel alloy is evident on this piece as there is significant weakness in the certain areas of the obverse as shown in the photos, plus slight softness on the wreath. Lustrous and satiny, the surfaces are mostly devoid of toning and show a fine nickel-gray iridescence adequate for the Proof 63 level. (#60822)
