Obsolete Currency
Exceedingly Rare and Important 1809 Raleigh Scrip Note

Raleigh, NC, The Trustees of the Raleigh Academy, 10¢ or One Shilling, October 1809, Choice Extremely Fine.
Haxby-NC-Not Listed. One of the most important North Carolina currency notes we have had the pleasure to handle. This note combines a rich Wake County local history with a dual denomination note evocative of the Colonial era and is a note that we feel merits a listing in Newman. The academy was created in 1801, but the buidling itself was not erected until 1804 for a cost of $1,150. The academy served the community for thirty some years and issued three series of notes. The note itself has a simple border, surrounding its texts with corner ornaments. The treasurerÕs signature is light, but visible. The back is clean and the 'One Shilling' shows completely. The paper quality is crisp and the eye appeal of this note wonÕt require an upgrade. That of course depends if another note comes up at all! We believe that this should be a Rariy 7 note and the plate examples in a major work on Noth Carolina scrip notes came from the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester. An opportunity for the astute specialist who appreciates great rarity and historical desirability.
