Autographs
Robert Fulton Sketches His Son

ROBERT FULTON, Artist and Perfector of the Steamboat.
Pencil Sketch Signed, 'R.F.' (the way he usually signed his sketches), but also inscribed 'Robt. Barlon Fulton 1810' (technically his signature, but also the name of his son). 8.5' x 11,' Very Fine. A loving father draws his son at play. The three images show his son with an over-the-top hat seemingly made of newspapers; in one image the boy holds a long stick; in another, he rides the stick like a hobby horse. The curly hair and girlish smock are characteristic of the feminine clothes that young boys wore at the beginning of the 19th century. The images are well-executed in keeping with FultonÕs not-so-well-known career as an artist. This highly personal sketch is an important part of the archive of Fulton sketches that we are offering in this sale.
