CAPTAIN SCARLET AND THE MYSTERONS (1967-1968) - Captain Blue Supermarionation Puppet Head

A Captain Blue head from the sci-fi puppet television series Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons. Captain Blue, as voiced by Ed Bishop, was Captain Scarlet's closest friend and field partner alongside Captain Brown. This lot was originally sold, along with 80 other original heads, as part of the Sylvis Anderson, Mary Turner, and John Reid collection at the Phillips Toys & Dolls auction in 1995.

Originally sculpted by Terry Curtis, this Supermarionation puppet head features a fibreglass head hand-painted in a pink skin tone; hair and eyebrows made of blonde mohair; eyes made of clear plastic hemispheres with paper cut-outs of photographed irises and white paint applied to the inside (these eyes have been fixed open by production for special effects); and a movable mouth featuring a leather insert underneath the lower lip to allow for flexibility. The hinged lower lip is held shut by a spring mechanism, and the iris cut-outs have since faded with only a slight pink tinge remaining.

A removable section in the back of the head has a strip of tape adhered to the interior labelled "Blue Stage 3." This section, which allowed access to the internal mechanisms, was held in place by strong magnets but now remains detached as the magnets have unstuck from the back panel. It comes presented inside a clear acrylic cover on a black wooden display stand with the series title applied in white vinyl on the base. Accompanying this lot are photocopies of the original listing featured in the Phillips Toys & Dolls auction brochure. The head exhibits a small hole and a scratch to the paint around the mouth, and further scuffs and paint wear around the lower neck from production use. Dimensions: (on display) 16.5 cm x 16.5 cm x 24 cm (6 1/2" x 6 1/2" x 9 1/2")

Estimate: GBP 8000 - 16000 M
