A satiny gem with faint champagne gold accents atop the mostly medium gray to russet layer of toning; the surface luster is smooth and hard-working, plus is free of the usual nicks and other marks often seen.

Now mostly forgotten except by music historians, Stephen A. Foster's life has become part of American legend as America's first great songwriter. Foster published such memorable ditties as "Oh Susanna" and "Nelly Was a Lady," campfire tunes that even today are a hit with teenagers and elders from sea to shining sea. There was no logical reason to put Foster's portrait on a half dollar commemorative for the city of Cincinnati, but that didn't stop the promoters of this coin from doing just that.
