Lot 0897 1858 Pattern 1C. J-193 PCGS Proof 64
A familiar design from a set of 12 different Pattern cents sold by the government in 1858. The Judd-193 has the traditional 1858 obverse as adopted in 1859 for the Indian cent. The reverse also has the normal oak wreath (adopted in 1860) but surmounted by a fancy shield rather than one with plain sides. Splendid mirror-fresh luster erupts vividly beneath the warm golden highlights, while natural tan shades form an even layer around the design elements of this mirror gem. The strike is strong, as might be expected for a test piece or "pattern" without even a hint of lightness at the eagle's head, tail or body.
