Mme Leon Bertaux 1889 Exposition marble sculpture relief plaque; features inset bronze medallion inscribed "Exposition Universelle - 1889" with classical figures and Eiffel tower in relief; signed "Louis Bottee"; exquisite detail exhibited in the sculpting of this work with its chubby cherubs among layered clouds; inset medallion on reverse leads us to believe that this work was made for and exhibited at the 1889 Paris Exposition, for which the Eiffel Tower was built; marble panel is sculpted with 3 cherubs; two of the cherubs float playfully among the clouds with trailing garlands of flowers & ribbons; third cherub sits on a cloud below & is resting on a world globe while holding a surveyor's compass & a scroll is unrolled beside him; signed lower right "Mme Leon Bertaux"; mounted in a carved & gilded gesso frame; very nice condition; sight size 15.5" tall x 11" wide (oval); overall dimensions 22" tall x 18" wide; relief carvings approx. 1" deep; Est. $1,500 - $2,500.
