Important Herter Brothers Style Victorian Ebonized, Inlaid and Ormolu mounted Ladies Desk with pate-sur-pate panels and columns. Ca. 1875. Origin unknown, possibly New York City. This desk exhibits the finest materials and craftsmanship available from the Victorian era. The desk features a domed crest with dore bronze trim above a central pate-sur-pate panel with winged cherub holding flowering branches. The two doors are inlaid with mixed wood, brass and mother of pearl in a repeating flower and dot design surrounding the central burl wood panel which are mounted with oval pate-sur-pate medallions designed with beautiful Greek style figures of women lightly clothed in flowing robes. The doors are flanked with bronze mounted pate-sur-pate half columns decorated with a floral and ribbon motif. The writing surface expands outward and features an inlay decoration similar to that of doors. A single drawer with bronze figural escutcheon finishes the case.
