Lot 0635 1860 Indian Head 1C PCGS Proof 64
This is the first year of the Indian Cent design featuring an oak wreath with a sprig of olive for the reverse; the two halves of the wreath and three arrows are knotted at the base with a ribbon, and a Union shield at the top. This design would be used exactly as you see it through the end of the series in 1909 with only tiny modifications along the way. The 1860 is the second most difficult Proof issue in the series, and it is very difficult to locate in choice Proof 64 condition, although not so expensive that it will dissuade bidders. It is believed that the majority of the 542 Proofs were struck only once, which would seem to explain the lack of highpoint sharpness and the typical moderate reflectivity seen in the fields on most 1860 Proofs. A handsome piece for the collector.
