Lot 0615 1852 U.S. Assay Office $10 Gold, 884 THOUS PCG
(SSCA #7072). This is one of the rare territorial issues found in the sunken wreck of the S. S. Central America off the coast of the Carolinas in the 1980s. A lustrous, if sometimes unevenly toned About Uncirculated example, it displays full sharpness on the eagle and shield, with striking detail just as sharp and impressive on the tablet-style reverse used on all 1852-53 Assay Office pieces of this and the $20 denomination.

In general, territorial issues are known for displaying tell-tale signs of somewhat crude minting techniques, but the striking quality of this Assay Office eagle is easily as nice as would be expected of a federal gold issue of the same year. Lightly abraded on each side with no obvious or singly distracting heavy marks, the aesthetic appeal is uncommonly high.

Comes complete with custom deluxe S.S. Central America presentation box.
