Lot 0608 1904 Lewis & Clark Gold $1 PCGS MS66
Rich bright-gold and warm color is nicely layered over each side of this lustrous solid-66 Gem. And so to the next qualification, the strike. Here we see quite good detail on the portraits of both sides with not even minor weakness to the sharp centers and hair detail. The Lewis and Clark commemoratives are noted for their low mintage. Only 10,000 were struck with the 1904 date.

On June 1, 1905 the first world's fair to be held in the Pacific Northwest - the Lewis and Clark Centennial and American Pacific Exposition and Oriental Fair - opened in Portland, Oregon. The 1905 exposition organizers' goal was to promote Portland as the commercial hub of the Pacific Northwest. The centennial of Lewis and Clark's nation-building journey across the continent in 1805 provided a perfect theme.
