Lot 0606 1922 Grant Gold $1, With Star PCGS MS68
The surfaces are radiant and each side has a nice veneer of vibrant yellow-gold patina that whips and tosses as it alternates between lighter and darker shades. Here, too, we are struck by the incredible, convincing design detail for all areas of this important Commemorative gold coin. Not even the slightest amount of flatness on the portrait of Grant can be found, nor any weak areas in the trees surrounding his birthplace.

In order to sell extra Grant Commemoratives to the public, the commission releasing these arrogated to themselves a lesson learned from the Alabama commission people the year before. They had the mint stamp a tiny star into the obverse field above the word GRANT. A total of 5,000 gold dollars were so counterpunched while each coin was in the die so as not to cause a flat spot to appear on the opposite side. Only a few people were taken in by this sly trick. Those who wanted to purchase both varieties did so knowingly; those who did not, did not, knowingly. Today's collector, therefore, has this very special MS68 Grant with Star example to weigh carefully. The present coin is far finer than most. Housed in PCGS holder #6556952, a recent census listed a hundred or so MS67 Grant dollars graded by the service, with only a few in this almost unbelievable MS68 quality.
