Lot 0507 1857-S $20 Liberty S.S. Central America PCGS M
(SSCA #1409). The fact that 5,400 Mint State 1857-S double eagles were salvaged from the wreck of the S.S. Central America, lost at sea in a hurricane in 1857, caused no professional coin dealer or experienced coin collector to be surprised in the least that these were absorbed into the market in what amounts to a blink of time. The discovery of such importance electrified the numismatic community when the discovery was announced. All were sold, realizing per reports, in excess of $100 million.

Prior to the treasure find, the 1857-S was considered to be easily found in Very Fine, Extremely Fine, and About Uncirculated, but rarely offered in Mint State, most of the latter being in dull, heavily bagmarked ranges. Now available on the auction market are choice and gem coins of very fresh appearance. Accordingly, this MS64 coin is an ideal candidate for a Type Set -- because it is rolling with original bright golden frostiness, has excellent detail in all the key design areas including the stars, and best of all has visual appeal that just won't quit!

Comes complete with custom deluxe S.S. Central America presentation box.
