The profile Augustus Saint-Gaudens chose for this innovative $10 design originated in a figure of Nike ('Victory'), part of his General Sherman Monument (1905), ultimately inspired by a Hellenistic Wingless Victory. At President Roosevelt's request, Saint-Gaudens gave this head a patriotic character by the addition of a feathered war bonnet, such as neither Liberty nor any Native American woman would have ever worn.

Warm golden bright surfaces exhibit strong cartwheel luster and a satin, almost matte-like quality that really engages the aesthetic sense with its serene beauty. No more, no less than the luster is the ideal state of the resulting design, just as fully struck, as attractive, as you could wish for in a high-end Mint State 66 coin, with complete detail at the feathers and hair, as well as the eagle's body, wings, and legs.
