Lot 048: Rookwood Scenic Most Important, Early Art Pottery Jug
Rookwood Scenic Most Important, Early Art Pottery Jug. Dated 1882 and including artist's monogram. An incredible rare piece of American Art Pottery suitable for the finest private or museum collection! The scene depicts a fluffy old owl perched on a twisted, gnarly branch while bats fly about a silvery, fog filled sky. The artist carved the background of the fog effectively in order to give it a "puffy" feeling. The owl's eyes are open and alert. The viewer gets the feeling that this old bird isn't too happy that you are looking at him. Light blue and mauve can be seen behind the silvery white clouds and splashes of gold accent the surface. Condition is excellent. Marked "Rookwood 1882" and artist monogram looks like N.J.H. conjoined. Artist unknown. Possibly "N.J. Hirschfeld" who worked at Rookwood 1882 and 1883. Approximately 12"t. Est. $4,000 - $6,000.
