Lot 0443 1806 $5 Bust. Round 6 PCGS MS62
A satiny frosted example of this early gold half eagle. Supple underlying luster is enveloped in pale yellow-golden iridescence. A pleasing example of the 1806 pointed 6 variety, not completely struck, but with sufficient detail in the head, cap, and shoulder area of the obverse that the designer's intent is clearly displayed. The heraldic eagle side, which is just as frosty and golden colored, was modeled upon the Great Seal of the United States. Only the artist failed to notice that he set the arrows and olive branch in the wrong claws. This was a boo-boo in terms of heraldry, but today's generation of collectors, knowing nothing about the intricacies (or is it silliness) of heraldry is oblivious to the fact. A first-rate coin in its grade, and one that would make a sparkling addition to any rare coin collection.
