Lot 034A: 16th-17th C. O/C Portrait in Manner of Van Dyck
16th-17th C. oil on canvas portrait of a man in the manner of Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641).

This exquisitely executed work depicts a gentleman from the waist up. The subject is holding a small sculpture of a woman in his left hand while his right hand rests in front. The magnificent attention to detail and use of light by the artist combine to produce a very imposing portrait. So life-like is the image that the viewer gets the feeling that the subject could turn his head or blink his eyes at any moment!

Overall tight cracquelure. Some in-painting. Small early patch at upper right and lower left. No signature visible. The stretcher is marked "Fleedham Liner" and is mounted in a simple 19th C. gilded frame.

Received by present owner through inheritance. Prior history is unknown. Sight size is 34" tall x 26.5" wide. Est. $8,000-$12,000.
