Lot 0086 1879-CC Morgan $1 PCGS MS63 DMPL PQ!
All but unobtainable finer as a deep mirror coin, the 1879-CC Morgan dollar with normal mintmark (as opposed to the capped mintmark variety) is an elusive issue in better Mint State grades. Usually frosty, the specimen that we offer here displays ice-white devices that are free of all but the most trivial bagmarks, surrounded by pools of mirror reflection. The otherwise strong strike wanes only slightly over the central obverse, but the overall eye appeal is undiminished. There are the usual small scuffs in the frost of the face, but the portrait remain true-to-form by being nicely frosted. It seems that the few prooflikes each year arise from first-strikes off of new dies. With constant pounding as the production run continues, the mirror polish on the dies abrades to fine flow-lines that create the familiar lustrous or frosty appearance seen on most. Struck on the mint's largest coining presses, silver dollars in 1879 were struck at the rate of about 90 coins per minute with a force equalling 160 to 175 tons per square inch (40 tons of force was required to strike an Indian cent).
