Lot 0038 1857 Liberty Seated $1 PCGS Proof 63
Untoned save for a light overlay of milky golden-gray iridescence, both sides display reflective fields above which the devices rise with light satiny striking definition, a result of satin frost deep within the die recesses that struck this choice piece. A faint swirl of hairlines can be seen in the obverse and reverse which is consistent with Proof 63 quality. The best part of it is there is no hint of a shallow strike on either the obverse or the reverse (these tended to be a little weak, especially on the stars and at the upper portion of the eagle). While more easily found than the 1855, the Proof 1857 seated dollar ranks as scarcer than the 1856. And as is the case with certain other early years, no one knows exactly how many Proof 1857 examples were minted, but NGC and PCGS combined have seen on the order of three-score coins in all grades, a likely estimate for the number of coins available to today's specialists.
