Little information is available about J.M. Ewing. All we know for certain is that the Engine Company 17 of Los Angeles opened on 1 April 1905 and operated under that name until 1927. From 1928 to 1980, Engine Company 17 and Truck Company 18 operated. In the Los Angeles Fire website’s archives, there is one photo, “NIGHT OF APR 10 1915/ No. 17 CALLED OUT”, that lists a “J. W. EWING”. This is either a different Ewing from the man listed on this badge, or a typo of the same man’s name. No further information about Ewing is available at the time of research. This lot includes a 1.5” diameter, round badge or medal embossed on both sides with “FIREMEN’s CELEBRATION/ & PARADE”. Each face of the badge bears an image: a fire wagon, and a cross of torches, ladders, hoses, and a fireman’s hat. The other badge in this lot is embossed on front with a vignette of a man and horse-drawn fire engine galloping under a ribbon that reads “L.A. F. D.”. The reverse of the badge is inscribed “J.M. EWING./ ENGINE CO 17/ JULY 1 1911”. - Jacobitz Collection -60006
