Los Angeles,CA - c1900 - Burdette, Robert J. Musings :
Lot of two large cards, each with a different advice for living, titled, “Keep Sweet and Keep Movin’” and “God’s Days and Mine.” Each printed story has a color photo of the author, who was a humorist, lecturer and licensed Baptist minister. Born in Illinois in 1843, Burdette worked for many years for the Burlington-Hawkeye paper (est. 1837) serving the southeast Iowa/western Illinois region. He was often referred to as the Hawk Eye Man. In 1884 he left there to become humorist for the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, but in 1897 he changed careers to become a licensed Baptist minister. In 1903 he moved to Los Angeles and took charge of the Temple Baptist Church. He died in California in 1914. The cards in this lot measure 7.5 x 12” and are of sturdy tan paper with brown print. Both are water stained.
