Los Angeles,CA - July 10, 1898 - Red Line, Vernon Trolley Car # 125 Photograph :
This 7" by 4 1/2" black mounted photo by William Garrett is of the motorman and conductor and their trolley. Mounted 9 3/4" by 6 1/2." All the mounting corners show wear. There are a few nicks on the edges as well. The photograph's contrast is good, as is it's focus. Faintly visible on the back of mounting, written in pencil, are the date, "Sunday, July 10, 1898," and the name of the motorman, "A. M. Koeger," and the conductor "A. L. Sawyer." The trolley has the words "Vernon" and "East Los Angeles Plaza University Station" printed on the side's top of the car. "University Division," "University Station," "U.S. Mail," and "Vernon" appear at the end. There is a sign on a pole behind the car that says "Concert West Lake Park." The Red Cars appeared in 1898 when Collis Huntington and his nephew Henry took over many of the various trolley lines in Los Angeles and consolidated them. Apparently, the Red Car line serviced the outlying areas of Los Angeles.
