<B>Los Angeles, CA</B></I> - $100 1902 Plain Back Fr. 707 <B>The Pacific NB</B></I> Ch. # 12454<BR>This was part of the Great Western Collection before it was acquired by Jim O'Neal at that sale five years ago. It was described by Lyn Knight as follows, "This is a very special note in beautiful condition. These notes, from this bank, walked into Superior Stamp & Coin, when they were on Seventh Street in downtown Los Angeles, in the summer of 1971. Among other things, nine of these $100's were sold barely over face value. The seller at the time was Mr. Smith's widow. [E.M. Smith signed these notes as President of this bank.] Several ended up in Los Angeles collectors' hands, but others, like this one, were gradually sold over the years. . . .A super note that is worth a bit more than the type." We've had the privilege of handling several of these notes, both fifties and hundreds, over the years, but this piece is in a class by itself. It is pristine, with extraordinary centering on both front and back, and utterly original and unmolested. The paper, signatures and embossing are perfection itself, and this may well be the nicest example of its type we've ever seen. It realized $15,950 (against a $10,000-15,000 pre-sale estimate) when Jim purchased it five years ago (when an ordinary $100 in Gem was barely worth $3,000), and is certainly worth more today.
