Watercolor painting. 10 1/4" by 12 1/4" framed. Lorita Frances Bates Cleaver (1893 - 1963) was active/lived in California. Lorita Cleaver is known for Commercial artist, illustrator, lithography. Born in California on April 14, 1893. Lorita Bates settled in Los Angeles in 1897 and later married a Mr. Cleaver. She was a resident there until her suicide on March 10, 1963. Having received encouragement through childhood and in high school, Los Angeles artist Lorita Frances Bates earned her Fine Art degree from California State Normal School (later known as UCLA). Inspired by spectacular posters of the Belle Epoque*, in addition to standard drawing and painting she also studied lithography. This skill brought her commissions from companies (e.g. Retail Dry Goods Association of Los Angeles - published in The Inland Printer*1918) and organizations for advertisements and high concept event-posters before she even graduated. The majority of her work was for California-based businesses and events. Lorita Frances Bates married Edwin Conroy Cleaver on Dec 28, 1920 - thereafter she began signing her married name as "Lorita Cleaver". Through her creative years in married life Lorita Cleaver became drawn to California plein-air painting producing fresh, swiftly painted, inspired landscapes out of doors, mostly in watercolor. She followed her deceased husband in 1963 by ending her own life.
