Controversial army officer (1804–1875) who did not get along well with Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton; President Johnson attempted to replace Stanton with Thomas without support of Congress, which was the reason behind his impeachment. LS signed “L. Thomas,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, August 30, 1844. Letter to a gentleman. In part: “Information relative to Elijah or Elisha D. Bowne…Elijah Bowne, enlisted on the 9th September 1914, for five years, and deserted from Captain Bliss’ company.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds and mounting remnants to borders.
