Complete 1st edition set of J.R.R. Tolkien’s trilogy “The Lord of the Rings.” London: George Allen & Unwin: 1954, 1955 and 1955. 1st UK editions. Three hardcover octavo volumes. “The Fellowship of the Ring,” 2nd impression published 1954; “The Two Towers,” 2nd impression published 1955; “The Return of the King,” 1st impression published 1955. This copy is the 1st State, as per Hammon & Anderson, with the signature mark '4' and having the slipped type on page 49. All in the original publisher's dustjackets not price clipped, and all with original, intact maps. Dustjackets show minor wear with light chipping to spines and some discoloration and sunning. Condition of books is as follows: ''The Return of the King'' is a bright, clean copy with only very minimal imperfections. ''The Two Towers'' shows small spots of staining or color loss on bottom of front boards and spine, otherwise clean. Small owner's name and date to the top center of the front free endpaper. ''The Fellowship of the Ring'' shows staining or color loss to the bottom of the front and rear boards. Light splitting to internal joints. Overall, a nice, early state set, in good plus condition.
